Rebuilding My Creative Identity: How VISBOOM Helped Me Discover a New Visual Language
Wiki Article
From the time I first started creating art until today, I have been someone who continues to negotiate what I want to create with what I am capable of producing in reality as an artist. I have an interest in surreal spaces and dreamlike pictures, along with emotionally-driven narratives. However, each time I tried to create the types of pictures contained in my mind, I would often run into many obstacles that stood in my way to achieving those images. These include the lack of access to larger areas and cinematic lighting, along with other necessities such as elaborate backdrops and equipment, which made it difficult for me to create many of the texture and emotion-based images that I found so captivating. In many cases, I ended up with ideas that were larger than life but not capable of being turned into reality, sketches that remained in my notebooks, and concepts that I knew would never come to fruition simply because I could not find the means to bring them to life.
My experience with visual development in campaigns for "floating memories" (the aesthetic, imagery, colour palette, textures and emotion behind this concept) provided an opportunity for me to express my creative ideas to capture the ethereal, dreamy quality of this theme: colours & hues; light and vibrant activities; an understated movement that evokes a sense of time stretching or slowing.
When I began working on my concept for the floating memories campaign I was faced with the limitations of my environment and the challenges it presented in achieving the visual results that I was seeking. I had my kitchen table to work from, the only backdrop to my efforts was the wrinkled tablecloth that I had draped over it, and I only had about 20 minutes each day to take advantage of the best natural light that was offered through my window. Despite using different coloured gels and makeshift reflectors to enhance my images, I failed to achieve the look I wanted.
At one point I even questioned whether or not I would be able to create this type of creative expression for myself, especially considering that I was not working from a well-resourced studio. It seemed as though my creative identity was far removed from my available resources to create that expression.
I returned to VISBOOM around that time and when I first tried their tools, all I used them for was replacing the backgrounds. I hadn't really thought about how their tools were more than just a way to replace backdrops for a bad photo, but actually create entire new worlds for people to see. At first, I was just going to test whether I could save my unfinished campaign. I had no expectations, so I uploaded a bunch of rough images and began playing around with the atmospheric tools in VISBOOM. After a short amount of time, the things I thought were completely beyond my reach, I could now visually represent, refine, and grow from. The plain table I used was changed into a floating marble table surrounded by a soft haze. Textures that I could never produce before, suddenly had depth. The colors changed elegantly from lavender to pale blue, as I had always imagined they would. For the first time, the spirit of the concept I wanted was now captured on my screen rather than my mind.
The most surprising experience I had was trying out VISBOOM’s ai model generator, which is a tool that I had thought to use in the past but hadn’t because directing people, booking studio time and trying to get the right lighting to match the mood I wanted were all things that overwhelmed me. With this generator, I was able to produce expressive and human-centered imagery without having to have anyone physically present to help me. The ai pose changer allowed me to manipulate body language to express feelings of introspection and stillness. I used the background swap function to create environments for my models that resembled dream gardens or derelict theaters, dust and light swirling around them. Every aspect of the images felt deliberate, and the quality of realism allowed me to view my images as real moments rather than items captured through the lens of a digital camera. In addition, I played with product placement through the ai tools employed for clothing and shoe try-ons, reimagining these products as surreal floating props or items that appeared to dissolve into light.
My initial experience with VISBOOM wasn't just as an enhancement for my imagery but as a means to define my evolution as an artist. As an artist and through using VISBOOM, I began removing limitations from past creative decisions. With the removal of barriers for years—the emotional expression I had attempted to portray through a physical representation of the art was now within me and the emotional and visual expression that I had always attempted to express, but that had been unable to create. The focus of my work was now shifted from dealing with limits to focusing solely on the emotional intention of whatever I created. I also found myself asking more profound questions about symbolism, flowing narrative, and colour palette emotion than I had previously. The way I viewed my practice in terms of practicality such as whether I had enough room to shoot became secondary to what I wanted the audience to view through breathing, pausing, and the emotional experience of looking at my images.
A key turning point in the development of my digital artistry occurred whilst working with a small textile company. They had asked me for images that portrayed the “essence of memory,” something that was very fragile, but equally very personal to them. Even though I have previously worked on similar projects, I was always daunted by the thought of using textiles. To do justice to a fabric it is essential to use the properly regulated light in order to show the texture clearly.
Once I had visualised the textures using VISBOOM, I uploaded these to the platform and used the HD Enhancement to accurately replicate the lightness of the weave with incredible clarity. The atmospheric effects on the app were used to create images that resembled the soft golden rays of light during the Golden Hour and to create stills of rooms that felt quiet and peaceful in the morning light. The end result of this was an image that looked like a nostalgic film and was so natural that it would ultimately be the first time the owner of the textile company felt as if her products had come alive.
Continued use of VISBOOM resulted in a transforming of my social media feed from a disorganised compilation of images and drawings into a cohesive and recognisable entity with a visual identity. The creative expression that was always absent from my creative output has finally appeared naturally as I continue to use VISBOOM to create diverse scene compositions. The once disorganised collection of ideas resembles the universe of my own artistic voice. I finally felt connected to my own creativity again.
However, the biggest change that happened was an internal one. VISBOOM changed my way of thinking about what I thought was possible. I learned that my imagination does not have to be limited to the physical limitations of my body, and that being creative flourishes with freedom rather than limitations. But, most importantly, VISBOOM reconnected me with the joy of creating without fear, hesitation, or compromises.
VISBOOM provided me with the means to produce visual images, however, it also assisted me in reclaiming my artistic self and creating a visual environment that is finally like the one that I have in my head. I now have a constant reminder each time I open the platform, that creativity is determined by how far I can imagine the images in my head and not the size of my studio or how expensive my equipment is.
